How to Locate a Dead iPhone Using Apple's Find My Network

Apple's Find My network allows iPhone 11 and newer devices to be tracked for up to 24 hours after shutdown or five hours in power reserve mode, using BLE and Ultra Wideband. Learn how to enable this feature.

Apple 's Find My network has become a central hub for users to locate their devices, offering a standout feature that allows tracking even when the battery is dead.

This capability, available on iPhone 11 and newer models, leverages a power reserve mode that keeps essential functions active after the main battery is depleted. When an iPhone is linked to an Apple Account with Find My enabled, it can be located for up to 24 hours after being turned off, or for about five hours in power reserve mode.

If the battery charge becomes critically low, the device automatically sends its last known location to Apple as a last resort. This gives users valuable extra time to recover a forgotten or stolen device, or to use Express Mode for navigation home via public transit. When an iPhone's battery drains to zero and the phone shuts down, iOS reserves a small amount of power to maintain certain features.

While the display cannot be turned on for normal use, this low-power state effectively turns the iPhone into something akin to an AirTag. Using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), any nearby Apple device that passes within range can ping the general location.

Additionally, if the lost iPhone and the passing device both have Ultra Wideband chips, spatial awareness technology provides a more precise location. This technology is widely supported across Apple products starting with the iPhone 11, though users should confirm compatibility for their specific model. To make sure this feature works, users should verify that their iPhone is properly connected to the Find My network. In the iPhone Settings, tap on your name, then select Find My.

Ensure you are signed in and that the Find My iPhone toggle is turned on. This pairs the device with Apple's Find My network. After enabling, open the Find My app and check the Devices tab to confirm your phone is visible. Taking these steps ensures you can benefit from the power reserve tracking functionality, providing peace of mind and a better chance of recovering a lost device even when it appears completely dead
