Emergency alert sent to phones across Lockland after 30-year-old cashier shot during robbery

According to a colleague, a man robbed Pereira and shot and killed her as she followed him out. Don Simpson, who worked with Pereira, said she lived her life for God and was kind to everyone she met.

An emergency alert went out to phones across Lockland after Pereira was killed, warning of an active shooter. Hamilton County EMA said the alert was sent based on the information available at that time, even though this appears to have been an isolated incident. Hannah Storrs with Hamilton County EMA said her team works with local leaders to determine when an alert is warranted with the information available in that moment.

“The village of Lockland felt their residents and community members were in danger. They requested an alert on their behalf that we sent out to notify the community,” Storrs said.

“There’s an armed assailant, he’s recently involved in a shooting — we’re going to send an active shooter alert regardless,” Storrs said. Simpson said Pereira had worked at Arise Auto since moving from Nigeria about eight years ago. Xavier University confirmed she was a graduate student there, releasing a statement that reads in part: “She was known for her positivity, deep faith, and generous spirit — hallmarks of a life lived in service to others.

Friends describe her as kind, honest, intelligent, and beautiful — inside and out. ” “It’s crazy — you can just come into the country to start a better life and this happens, you know,” Simpson said. Storrs said the decision to display the alert on billboards was not made by Hamilton County EMA. Lamar Advertising is responsible for those billboards and the wireless emergency alerts.

Lamar Advertising has not responded to questions about why the alert went on billboards outside of Lockland. No arrest has been made in the shooting. Anyone with information should contact the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office.
