The People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy has tested two new Type 055 destroyers in a live-fire drill near Taiwan and the East China Sea.

The Chinese Navy has recently tested its newest generation of warships, including two Type 055 missile destroyers, in a high-intensity live fire drill near Taiwan and the East China Sea . The People’s Liberation Army Navy , considered the world’s largest navy, with 234 warships and 167 support vessels, deployed the newly commissioned 13,200-ton guided-missile destroyers in mid-March 2026.

Named Dongguan and Anqing , the ships are the first of their kind to enter service with the Eastern Theater Command Navy that oversees the waters in the direction of Taiwan and the East China Sea.China debuted the two new destroyers on March 8. As per the official newspaper of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, the PLA Daily, the drill simulated heavy combat scenarios, including coordinated strikes against air and surface threats.Expanding naval strengthThe two vessels are among the largest and most powerful destroyers in the world. According to the South China Morning Post they were tested against fast-moving aerial targets under heavy electromagnetic interference, a scenario aimed to mimic modern electronic warfare environments. The PLA Daily noted the ships would “accelerate their integration into the joint combat system” of the Eastern Theatre Command. “The newly commissioned Type 055 guided-missile destroyers Anqing and Dongguan recently formed a task group for the first time and sailed to a sea area to conduct live-fire training,” it added. The two Type 055 destroyers used their precise radars to locate, track and engage targets.Additionally, the drill focused on real-time battlefield coordination. Commanders aboard the ships shared situational data across the fleet with integrated datalinks. This enabled synchronized strikes across multiple domains. “The training focused on air defense operations and close-range counterfire, effectively testing the vessels’ combat effectiveness and the crew’s tactical proficiency, and enhancing the task group’s coordinated response capability,” the PLA Daily noted.Advanced destroyersThe exercise included anti-submarine operations. Helicopters and advanced sonar were used to find and neutralize simulated underwater targets. “New equipment generates new combat capabilities,” the captain of the Dongguan stated. “Our confidence in winning on the battlefield is stronger than ever,” he continued. The deployment followed rising tensions between Tokyo and Beijing after Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi hinted at possible intervention in a Taiwan Strait conflict. Designated as the Renhai-class cruiser by NATO, the Type 055 is often described as a “super destroyer” due to its size and firepower. Each vessel is equipped with a 112-cell vertical launch system capable of deploying a wide range of missiles, including those for air defense, anti-ship strikes and land-attack missions.According to Chinese officials, the Type 055 is created to function as a command hub at sea. Its advanced electronics allow it share data with satellites, aircraft and other ships to coordinate operations over large areas. This makes it an important escort for China’s carriers and large amphibious ships, including the Type 075, as well as the Type 076, the first amphibious assault ship in the world equipped with electromagnetic catapult and arresting technologies.
