Neighbors captured dramatic video of firefighters working to locate and extinguish the fire Tuesday afternoon in the 600 block of East Chestnut Street. The row home has since been condemned. Footage obtained by CBS 21 shows crews using a pike pole to break through the front of one of the homes after initial attempts to gain access were unsuccessful.

“At first, we didn’t find any fire inside, but obviously we had a fire somewhere, so we had to start cutting holes in the roof,” Lancaster City Fire Chief Todd Hutchinson said. Additional video from a nearby resident shows firefighters standing on top of the row home as smoke poured from the roof while crews cut ventilation holes. Resident Carmen Pino said firefighters knocked on the door several times before forcing entry.

“They knocked on the door a few times, nobody came, and that’s when I heard one firefighter say, ‘We gotta do it,’” Pino said. Neighbors described a large emergency response as firefighters worked in intense conditions to contain the blaze.

“I remember seeing three specific firemen come out, and they were dripping in sweat,” Pino said. “They went right into the ambulance and were sitting there having to get oxygen. ” Officials said the fire spread through two row homes. Despite firefighters’ efforts, both homes were ultimately considered a total loss.

Authorities said one resident was inside when the fire started and called 911 after smelling smoke. The neighboring homeowner was not home at the time.

“Luckily, the homeowner started smelling smoke and then the detectors activated, and she was able to exit the building and call for help,” Hutchinson said. “I’m definitely praying for her,” Hansley said. “She looked kind of panicked. ”Both homeowners told CBS 21's Yasmine Cowan they are overwhelmed by the loss and are now focused on cleaning up and trying to salvage what remains of their belongings.
