A devastating road collision on the A59 in Gisburn, Lancashire, has resulted in the death of a five-year-old girl and left several others with serious injuries.
The incident occurred last Thursday at approximately 3:55 p.m. when a Skoda Karoq traveling westbound collided with a Volkswagen Golf R near the old council yard, between the junctions of Crow Park Lane and Strawberry Fields. Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, where three occupants of the Skoda-a female driver in her 60s and two child passengers, a boy and a girl both aged five-suffered severe injuries.
The driver of the Volkswagen Golf, a man in his 20s, also sustained serious injuries. Lancashire Police have now confirmed that the five-year-old girl died in hospital on Tuesday afternoon. The woman and the five-year-old boy remain hospitalized, as does the driver of the Golf, who is reportedly being treated as a witness by authorities.
Sergeant Laura Kendal of Lancashire Police expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy, stating, "It is heartbreaking news that the little girl has passed away and my thoughts first and foremost are with her family and loved ones. My thoughts also continue to be with the three people who remain in hospital being treated for the injuries they received in this terrible collision.
" She emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and in its early stages as police work to determine the exact sequence of events. Sergeant Kendal urged the public to come forward with any information or dashcam footage from the area around the time of the crash, particularly those who have not yet contacted police.
"We ask you to please refrain from speculating about what happened," she added. "The investigation will determine this and speculative comments around what might have happened can be very distressing for the family of the little girl. " Anyone with relevant information is asked to email SCIU@lancashire.police.uk or call 101, quoting log 0986 of May 21.
The community continues to grapple with the aftermath of this heartbreaking event, highlighting the fragile nature of life and the critical importance of road safety. As families mourn and victims fight to recover, the police investigation remains a priority to uncover the facts and provide closure to those affected
