DC Comics has unveiled new costumes for Batman and Robin in the upcoming Superman: Father of Tomorrow #4. The redesign takes inspiration from Batman Beyond's iconic design and gives the duo a shared visual identity. The new costumes are part of a new timeline where Clark Kent's father, Jor-El, has survived Krypton's destruction and become Superman. The issue will explore the new Batman and Robin's relationship with Jor-El and their place in a world where humanity has been transformed by Kryptonian technology.
In an epic new redesign recently revealed by DC, Batman and Robin sport matching costumes that appear to be an evolution of Batman Beyond's iconic design.
Debuting just a year after his vigilante mentor, Robin has been a constant presence in Gotham ever since, even as multiple young heroes have taken up and graduated from the identity. Despite that fact, the two rarely have much in common in terms of their costumes. Batman is a creature of the night, with a costume designed to melt into the shadows.
Meanwhile, Robin is a cocksure acrobat whose bright colors dazzle and disorient his opponents. It's rare the two find a midway between these very different looks - but that's exactly what fans of the Dark Knight are about to get. Superman: Father of Tomorrow Debuts New Batman and Robin DC recently revealed solicit information for the upcoming Superman: Father of Tomorrow #4, from Kenny Porter and Danny Earls.
The cover art by Gabriel Hardman shows Jor-El's Superman in a white costume with Batman and Robin behind, wearing black costumes with blood-red detailing and masks that entirely cover their faces. Danny Earls' variant cover showcases Batman's costume in more detail, with elements familiar from the iconic Batman Beyond continuity, including an all-black costume with a large red logo, a face-covering mask and a red-lined cape.
Batman and Robin appear to both have metallic armor on their arms and legs, as well as their traditional billowing capes. Robin is wearing a lot more black than in his traditional costume, while retaining the green, red and yellow generally associated with his visual identity.
However, in this case the green and yellow are played down, while the black and red give mentor and sidekick a shared visual identity. Batman's New Costume Represents a Dramatically Different World The new Batman and Robin exist in a new timeline where Clark Kent's father is the one who survived Krypton's destruction. Traveling to Earth, Jor-El befriended the Kents and took the name Jordan Kent.
While he initially hid his alien nature and abilities from the world, not wanting to influence human progress, this changed upon Jonathan Kent's death - a fatality that could have been prevented if Earth doctors had access to Kryptonian science. In response, Jor-El reveals his alien identity to the world, becoming Superman. From there, issue two will take a major leap forward, taking place in a world where Jor-El has revolutionized humanity's abilities and technology.
The new Batman and Robin are therefore versions of the heroes who took on their vigilante identities in a world transformed by Jor-El's tech. Fans can expect an even more advanced version of the Dark Knight, given Bruce Wayne always employs the most advanced gadgets and vehicles in his crime-fighting mission. His armored suit and extensive utility belt also give this impression. Who Is Father of Tomorrow's Robin?
One big question hanging over this debut is the identity of Robin in this timeline. Did Jor-El changing the world mean that Bruce Wayne never met the first Robin Dick Grayson, or perhaps that he never graduated to the Nightwing identity? There's also the question of why Jor-El's Superman is reaching out to the Dark Knight, especially as enemies including Lex Luthor and General Lane begin to utilize his tech against him.
The issue's summary reads: JOR-EL MEETS BATMAN AND ROBIN! Superman is struggling with how to help humanity reach their potential, so he looks for help from a friend in Gotham City. Enter: Batman and Robin! But Jor-El might have his hands full in Metropolis when General Sam Lane brings his WildC.
A.T. S. to the city to face down the Man of Steel! It seems that even in a world where humanity has been uplifted by Kryptonian technology, Batman is still the model of ideal human potential, with Jor-El wanting the hero to help guide humanity further into the future.
Will the new Batman and Robin accept this offer, or will this timeline's version of the Dark Knight and Boy Wonder be too wary of an alien conqueror who has made it his mission to reshape human society? Superman: Father of Tomorrow #4 is coming August 26 from DC Comics
