Doctors say kratom can pose serious health risks.

) - Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall is warning store owners not to sell kratom, a substance banned in the state since 2016, amid concerns that it is returning to shelves in improperly labeled products.

Marshall said independent lab testing shows kratom has resurfaced in Alabama through products that may not clearly disclose their contents. “What we discovered through independent lab testing is that kratom has made its way back to Alabama through improperly labeled products,” Marshall said.Dr. Kre Johnson, owner of Brownstone Healthcare and Aesthetics, said consumers should not assume that over-the-counter herbal products are safe. “All herbs are not created equal, just like all medicines are not created equal. Just because it is an herb doesn’t make it safe. Just because it is an herb and over the counter,” Johnson said.“There are people who have had liver issues within a couple of weeks of using it. You can have liver toxicity,” she said. Marshall said kratom was once a substitute for opioids like heroin and fentanyl for people who could not access them legally, contributing to its ban. “What we began to see previously was that kratom became the preferred drug of choice for those who were not able to get heroin, fentanyl, opioids legally on the streets… This was something that was available, but not marketed that way, but had the same impacts,” Marshall said.Doctors urge anyone who believes they have purchased a product containing kratom to stop using it immediately. Consumers can also contact their local health department or the attorney general’s office to report sales.Milton woman arrested on felony charges including child pornography, sexual contact with animalFlorida man pulled over by troopers after multiple calls about missiles in his truck bedSouthwest Mobile County Chamber of Commerce honors community leaders at annual galaVictim’s mother issues statement after New Year’s Eve shooter sentencedMore than 100 students arrested in massive Gulf Shores house party bust
