The Wolves fell to the Brahmas in five sets as their bid for back-to-back state championships ended one match short of the title game.

AUSTIN — The destination seemed improbable when fall practices began. However, as the Davenport volleyball’s season progressed, things fell into place, and the unthinkable seemed possible. And it was so close for the Wolves , who fell short in their bid for back-to-back state championships after Bellville prevailed 25-20, 16-25, 24-26, 25-15, 17-15 in their Class 4A Division I state semifinal Tuesday at Burger Activity Center .

“We definitely had a lot of people step into different roles his year, and we all had to learn how to navigate different things, but we made it work and I think we did pretty well,” senior middle blocker Emily Williams said. “We filled the gaps and exceeded expectations. I’m just so proud of everyone.” The Wolves returned five players who reached the floor when they downed Canyon Randall for the state title last year.
