The 20th Annual Stream Clean Up Day will commence at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 8.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The 20th Annual Stream Clean Up Day will commence at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 8. As boaters return to the river, the urge to join in on the fun might be increasing for some residents.
But they may also notice the trash that has collected in or near our local water ways. There is a way to hit the water and help remove unwanted debris at the same time. “Stream Clean Up Day is...one of the main big public outreach events that we do every year promoting storm water conservation,” said John O’Brien, an environmental analyst for the City of Fairbanks. It involves groups of volunteers going out and cleaning the trash that has entered our water systems in both the Chena River and Noyes Slough. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon with different groups taking on different sections of the river and slough in town. “One of them, the most upstream one are going to be Ft. Wainwright soldiers from something called the Boss Brigade and they’ll be cleaning the portion from Ft. Wainwright MWR down to Graehl Landing,” O’Brien explained. Other groups will clean from Graehl Landing down to the Chena River Recreation Site off of Geraghty Avenue. This location was also referred to as DNR Park. There will also be a group going from University Avenue down to Pikes Landing. “We request that people dress for the weather, it’s a rain or shine event,” said O’Brien. For June 8, sunshine and warmth is in the forecast but rain gear is a good thing to have on hand. Sturdy shoes will be a must for those walking. Those using canoes are required to have a personal flotation device. The provided canoes at the event will include personal flotation devices. “When we meet at 9 a.m. to do the safety briefing we’ll hand out little clean up day kits and they consist of disposable gloves, trash bags, a bucket to handle any item that wont work well in a bag and then things like hand sanitizer and bug dope and emergency whistles also,” O’Brien said. Reflective vests will also be given to those traveling on foot and all volunteers will need to use the sign in sheet so they are counted in the volunteer effort and as a safety measure. Once all the trash is collected -- it will be brought back to the first meeting spot at the Chena River Recreation Site. “Then it’s loaded into a City of Fairbanks dump truck and we take it to the Fairbanks North Star Borough land fill,” O’Brien explained. There the trash will be weighed for record keeping purposes. Volunteers are asked to arrive at the Chena River Recreation Site prior to the start of the event and safety meeting at 9 a.m. Since Stream Clean Up day first began, an estimated 10.5 tons of trash and debris have been removed from the Chena River and Noyes Slough. All of those materials have been collected by 776 volunteers since 2005.
