Trappers passed down their expert techniques at the Scout Camporee.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Trapping has a long and storied history as a way of life in Alaska and the older generation of trappers is passing down their tricks of the trade. In a series of workshops at the Scouts ’ annual spring ‘ Camporee ’ at Lost Lake, several seasoned trappers including Jim Masek , who has been trapping since the age of 13 shared what they refer to as the effective and ethical methods of harvesting fur.
“What we do is we wire this off to a tree,” Masek demonstrated, fixing a wire snare into place. “I normally give it three good, tight wraps so it doesn’t open up. This wire will hold about 900 pounds of tensile strength.” The group of scouts around Masek watched as he demonstrated how to set the snare along a trail so it hung at head-height for a coyote, the wire all but invisible in the brush. After watching for a time they got the opportunity to craft some equipment themselves, such as smaller marten snares and cubbies. “A marten snare is going to be a pretty small loop,” Masek explained. “We only need a loop about that big around then you need a little tail to be able to attach it.” The Alaska Trappers Association has been around since October of 1973, since the society then known as Chapter 19 of Fur Takers of America formed their charter. Since then, they have continued to hand down their techniques.Apple could owe you up to $349 in the iPhone 7 settlement. Here’s who qualifiesThis weekend in Fairbanks: May 17-19
