Forensic genealogy helped investigators determine who the man was.

A John Doe whose body was found in the Susquehanna River 26 years ago has been identified. The Lancaster County coroner said James Gibson , 39, of Harrisburg, died of freshwater drowning . The manner of death remains undetermined. A fisherman discovered his body on April 18, 1998, in the Turkey Point area of the river in Manor Township .The coroner's office said significant changes to the body, caused by time and environmental factors, made the man unrecognizable.

Despite various efforts over the years to try to figure out who the man was, the case remained unsolved. In September 2023, the coroner's office began working with the DNA Doe Project. The nonprofit organization helps identify decedents using forensic genealogy. The coroner's office provided a tooth to DNA, and the nonprofit was able to find a potential candidate: a man who was reported missing in February 1998.
