A short story exploring the internal journey of Paul, an Irish immigrant facing a difficult decision about his future in America.

As a reporter, I've long been interested in the stories of Irish people who came to the United States in the 1980s on tourist or student visas, only to overstay them. Some eventually became legal residents, others didn't. Many of these undocumented immigrants paid taxes, built lives, and settled down. The only catch was that if they left the country, even for a short visit, they couldn't return. It struck me as a compelling narrative.

Living in San Francisco during the first decade of the 21st century, I became familiar with this world. One story that emerged was that of Paul, a man facing a difficult decision. He has a young daughter in San Francisco, with whom he's recently begun building a relationship. His estrangement from her mother, Sandra, precedes her birth, and there are unresolved tensions between them. I chose to leave the source of this bitterness somewhat undefined. One advantage of writing a short story rather than a novel is the ability to omit extensive emotional histories and backstory, focusing instead on a specific moment in time. You can convey much through implication. With Paul and Sandra, there's no mystery. He wasn't reliable, and she grew weary of it. It seems she has little interest in him. The story itself provides all the necessary information. Paul clearly didn't intend to be a father, but once he embraces that responsibility, he becomes deeply attached.I believe his connection with Geraldine transforms him. He doesn't fully understand how, which adds to the story's intrigue. This internal change forms the core of his journey. The story is told in the third person but closely follows Paul's perspective. While I can envision a version told from Geraldine's or Sandra's point of view, it wouldn't be as compelling. For Sandra, the hike with Geraldine and Paul is unremarkable, not a pivotal moment. Shifting to her perspective would dilute the narrative energy. For Paul, however, this Saturday becomes an indelible day, though nothing extraordinary happens. This ordinariness amplifies the significance of the day for him. Perhaps in the future, when I imagine an older Geraldine, I might explore the story from her side. The story concludes before Paul returns to Ireland. I haven't envisioned his future beyond this point, at least not yet.
