Finding the Perfect Hybrid Running Shorts with Phone Storage
Running ShortsHybrid ShortsTwo-In-One Shorts

A detailed review of two-in-one hybrid running shorts, comparing features like inner layer fit, pocket placement, and waistband adjustability to help runners choose the best options for carrying phones comfortably during training and races.

Finding shorts that fit a phone and feel comfortable during runs is surprisingly difficult. The best style I've discovered is the two-in-one hybrid, combining an inner compressive layer with a loose outer shell.

I avoid biker-style shorts because they're too revealing, making the outer shell essential. The ideal shorts have a supportive inner layer with side pockets for a phone and essentials, silicone grips on the hem to prevent riding up, and a lightweight outer shell for coverage. My go-to pair, similar to Athleta's design, was perfect for Brooklyn half-marathon training, but with only one pair, I sought alternatives that matched comfort and reliability.

I initially focused on a grippy under layer but abandoned that criterion after finding few options beyond Athleta. After extensive online research and review analysis, I purchased several hybrid shorts for testing and compared their strengths and weaknesses. Some shorts, like a pair I bought two years ago, caused chafing on a ten-mile run due to an inner layer that was too short and loose, riding up immediately. They also had only one pocket, limiting storage.

Brooks Dash shorts shared similar issues: an inner layer that rode up and a single side pocket, though they featured an adjustable drawstring waistband. Vuori's hybrid shorts disappointed with an inseam of just 2.5 inches, feeling too short, loose, and thin; I returned them. On's Volt shorts stood out with a thicker, more compressive inner layer and pockets on both sides, reminiscent of Athleta's support.

The windproof, water-repellent outer shell had a loose, track-short silhouette and a bonded waistband with three slip pockets for gels, including a zippered central pocket that fit my phone. These were excellent for race day but notably expensive. Affordable options also delivered value. A pair from Amazon offered a compressive inner layer that stayed put despite a shorter inseam, a comfortable waistband, and pockets on both layers-two on the inner short and two zippered on the outer shell.

Though the outer layer was less loose, inner pocket access remained adequate for daily workouts. Ciele's shorts impressed with a lightweight design and a four-inch inseam that prevented riding up. They featured side pockets and a zippered back pocket large enough for an iPhone 16 Pro, plus a drawstring waist to prevent slipping-a drawback I'd experienced with my Athleta shorts when pockets were full.

Another style with longer basketball-short vibes had a stretchy outer shell and an inner layer that stayed in place, plus a single side pocket, a roomy zippered back pocket for a phone, and a tiny pocket near the drawstring for small items. These were comfortable for both training and lounging. Athleta's updated hybrid shorts improved upon the Crossover model with a drawstring waistband and a breezier, sportier outer shell, though some reviewers found it too plasticky.

Overall, testing revealed that key features-inner layer length, compressive fit, secure pockets, and adjustability-make hybrid shorts suitable for running with a phone. Preferences vary, but options exist across price points, from premium brands like On to budget-friendly Amazon finds
