Ohio health officials are investigating after several cases of botulism were found at an Ohio prison.
OHIO -
According to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction , officials found four suspected cases of botulism at the Belmont Correctional Institution last week. The ODRC believes the cases are connected to contraband homemade alcohol, which is more commonly referred to as “hooch.”The Center for Disease Control gave all four patients anti-toxin medication.
ODRC medical staff performed screenings of more than 2,000 inmates at Belmont Correctional Institution to see if any other inmates consumed hooch recently.ODRC officials were also able to find and confiscate the hooch from the symptomatic patients’ housing areas.Botulism is not known to be contagious, and those who consumed the contaminated homemade alcohol are the only at-risk individuals. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, difficulty breathing, and blurry vision.
The ODRC continues to work with the CDC, Ohio Department of Health, Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, and other local health officials on the cases.Garfield Heights police chase ends in fiery crash on I-77; at least 3 people hurtAfternoon shootout in Akron apartment parking lot injures 18-year-old woman, police say
