HENRY COUNTY, Ala. - A storm tore through Henry County early Thursday morning, splitting homes, damaging downtown businesses and displacing families in Newville and Abbeville while most residents were still asleep.

Powerful winds toppled trees, crushing two homes and tearing into businesses, destroying structural walls in the process. In Newville, a tree collapsed the home of Myk Ostermeyer, just feet from where he and his wife were sleeping. “We’re blessed to still be alive. My wife was in that room 30 minutes prior to all this happening. So, I’m just thankful that we’re okay. This can be replaced, but her life cannot,” Ostermeyer said.“We’re fortunate to be alive. But what could have happened if that tree had gone 20 more feet to the right? That would have been directly over our bedrooms. And it had already crushed half of my house. What would have done to the part that we were living in or where we’re sleeping?” Ostermeyer said.Blalock, his wife and three grandchildren were all inside at the time. “Well, we’re just trying to figure out where we’re gonna be living at, because there’s no insurance on the house. And we got, that’s the only place for me and my wife and three grandkids were living. And we were all in the house when it happened,” Blalock said. Downtown Newville sustained direct damage as well. Doors were torn off, roofs peeled back and windows shattered.“Well, it’s pretty devastating. It’s just going to set us back a little while because of the damage. Just going to have to fix it and help fix everybody else’s,” Wyrrick said.“And that’s just what we do. We love to help each other, and we’re there for each other,” Wyrrick said.“It’s going to be a long recovery because literally we have a tree all the way through our house. The outreach has been very thankful and kind. It’s let us know that there’s still humanity in a world that we live in today,” Ostermeyer said. The National Weather Service has not yet confirmed the cause of the damage but an assessment is ongoing. Download the WTVY News4 app to get alerts and stories the moment they are published.
