Caterpillar unveils autonomous excavators, haul trucks, and site systems at CES 2026, backed by 30 years of real-world automation experience.
At CES 2026 , Caterpillar Inc. unveiled a new generation of intelligent, autonomous construction machines designed to change how work gets done on jobsites. The company said the systems represent more than three decades of automation research, development, and real-world deployment.
Caterpillar said the technology embeds autonomy directly into construction workflows, targeting safer operations, higher precision, and improved productivity across global projects.“By embedding autonomy into construction workflows, we’re reshaping the industry to achieve safer jobsites, better jobs and easy precision that redefines productivity for the modern jobsite,” said Caterpillar Chief Technology Officer Jaime Mineart.Intelligent machine lineupCaterpillar’s intelligent product lineup spans core construction and earthmoving equipment, along with connected site systems. Excavators will support autonomous trenching, loading, grading, and related operations.Loaders will handle material movement and truck loading using autonomous navigation and real-time data processing. The lineup also includes off-road haul trucks designed to transport large volumes of rock, soil, and minerals. By the mid-2000s, teams expanded real-world testing under extreme conditions. This work helped position Caterpillar among the first manufacturers to deliver Level 4 autonomy, where machines operate independently.Today, Caterpillar operates one of the world’s largest autonomous mining fleets. The company said these machines have safely moved more than 11 billion tonnes of material and traveled over 380 million kilometers. View this post on Instagram Caterpillar said its autonomous systems rely on AI, machine learning, computer vision, and edge computing to process sensor data in real time.Integrated LiDAR, radar, GPS, and high-resolution cameras provide a constant, 360-degree digital view of the jobsite.“Together with our customers, we’re transforming the industries we serve—one jobsite, one breakthrough, one bold idea at a time,” Mineart said.Additionally, Caterpillar also pledged $25 million over five years to launch a global innovation prize focused on workforce education. The initiative will identify and scale solutions that help workers adapt to digital and autonomous roles. For ongoing news, in-depth reporting, and key developments from CES 2026, read the IE team’s coverage here.
