A 16-year-old Oklahoma boy who confessed to beating his adoptive mother to death with a hammer will be prosecuted as an adult, a judge ruled on Friday.
Jordan Weems faces first-degree murder charges in the January 27 slaying of 47-year-old Spring Weems at the family's home in Edmond, a suburb of Oklahoma City. Prosecutors allege that Weems retrieved a hammer from the garage, waited for his mother to exit the kitchen, and then struck her repeatedly in the head. After the killing, he reportedly rolled her body to the curb inside a garbage bin.
In addition to murder, Weems is charged with desecration of a corpse and unauthorized removal of a dead body. Under Oklahoma law, defendants aged 15 to 17 charged with first-degree murder are automatically tried as adults. Defense attorneys had sought to have the case handled in juvenile court, citing Weems's severe mental illness and his history of running away from home.
However, the judge ruled that the severity of the crime warranted adult prosecution. Weems has been held without bond since his arrest and was recently transferred to the adults-only Logan County Jail. A psychological evaluation has been ordered, and his next court appearance is scheduled for June 17, with a formal arraignment two days later. Court documents reveal that Spring Weems had imposed strict disciplinary measures on her adopted sons in the weeks prior to her death.
The mother reportedly forced Jordan and his brother to wear orange prison-style jumpsuits after they repeatedly ran away from home and evaded police. She also simulated prison meals, serving only ham and beans or chicken and beans. According to an affidavit, Jordan had repeatedly stated that he intended to kill his mother during this period of punishment. The teen's public defender had argued that these harsh conditions exacerbated his preexisting mental health issues, leading to the violent outburst.
The prosecution, however, contends that the murder was premeditated and that Weems understood the consequences of his actions. The case has drawn attention to the challenges faced by adoptive families dealing with troubled youth, as well as the legal complexities surrounding juvenile offenders charged with serious crimes. Spring Weems was described as a devoted mother to her five children, including three adopted siblings. She was known for frequently posting about her children's athletic achievements on social media.
Her disappearance was first noticed when her biological son, identified as AW, found his mother missing on January 27. AW asked Jordan about her whereabouts, and the teen claimed she was helping her oldest daughter with a new baby. When Spring failed to return home the next day, despite her car being in the driveway and her bedroom locked, AW contacted his father, Spring's ex-husband Levi. Levi reported her missing, and deputies searched the home but found nothing initially.
It was only after further investigation that Jordan's brother, TW, revealed details of the punishment and the threats. The body was later discovered in a trash bin at the curb. The case has shocked the community, highlighting the intersection of adolescent mental health, parental discipline, and violent crime.
