IOC President Assures Sports Leaders of Future Olympic Opportunities

The International Olympic Committee's (IOC) president, Kirsty Coventry, has assured sports leaders that sports and events that are cut from the program of the 2032 Brisbane Olympics will have a way to return in future summer editions.

The International Olympic Committee's ( IOC ) president, Kirsty Coventry , has assured sports leaders that sports and events that are cut from the program of the 2032 Brisbane Olympics will have a way to return in future summer editions.

The guarantee came after Coventry warned in February about 'uncomfortable' conversations to come to make future Olympic Games more efficient. The IOC aims to finalize the list of sports in the Brisbane program in a few months, which will be smaller than the 36 that will be contested in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

'There is a path (back), it's not just an end', Coventry told The Associated Press on Wednesday, outside of the annual assembly of the summer sports group known as ASOIF. Brisbane could also have fewer than the 353 medal events that will be contested in Los Angeles.

'I know not everyone will be happy. The goal is not to destroy any sport', Coventry acknowledged on Wednesday to ASOIF members. Coventry also met with ASOIF members on Tuesday and assured them that 'we do not have specific numbers' as targets for the Brisbane sports and medal events program. The most important metric seems to be the number of venues needed, as the IOC seeks to manage costs for host cities.

'The cost and complexity appear when you start adding additional venues for single-purpose events', Coventry explained to AP. 'That's where we have to look and say: 'How could we change that? ''. A key step to streamline the Brisbane program and future Games is a full IOC membership meeting on June 24 in Lausanne, which should agree on a process to evaluate sports and events.

A list of sports for Brisbane could be confirmed in December, with a longer calendar until 2029 to confirm the detailed medal events program. The 36 sports in Los Angeles represent an increase from just 26 in the 2012 London Olympics, and ASOIF president Ingmar de Vos later acknowledged: 'It has grown too much and needs to be returned to a proportionate level'.

The modern pentathlon has long been considered vulnerable to losing its Olympic status, while slalom canoeing requires a very specific venue. The sports added to the Los Angeles program - including flag football, lacrosse, and squash - will compete for their place in Brisbane before having their turn in 2028. Coventry paused the bid process for the 2036 Olympics last year, in her first major decision as IOC president.

Qatar is widely seen as a strong contender for a project that will likely be split across the Middle East region, which has been in the spotlight during the conflict between the US and Israel against Iran. Officials from the organizing committee responsible for sports and venues attended Lausanne to brief federation leaders before a week of key events in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is trying to secure another term that extends beyond the Olympics, and the IOC's annual in-person panel - known as 'cocom', for the coordination commission - is visiting to oversee preparations.

'We are certainly paying attention', La 2028 sports and execution director Shana Ferguson told AP about the primary election on Tuesday. A major revelation will be announcing where the cycling road races will end, always a key Olympic event to showcase the city. Paris set a high bar with finish lines framed under the Eiffel Tower.

Members of ASOIF are eager to know what the IOC will give them as collective participation of the Los Angeles Olympics revenues, valued in several billions of dollars. With IOC president Coventry seated in the front row, ASOIF president Ingmar de Vos asked for 'fair and sustainable models' to recognize the work and value of its members in the Summer Games.

The IOC paid $590 million of the Paris Olympics revenues, which represented a 9% collective increase from the $540 million of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics
