Kyle Adler, taken from his Chilean mother as an infant during the Pinochet regime, discovers his true identity through DNA testing and meets his birth mother in Santiago, highlighting the legacy of illegal adoptions and the fight for justice.

Kyle Adler, a 36‑year‑old Chile an American, travelled from Miami to Santiago in February 2026 to meet the woman who gave him birth nearly four decades earlier.

The reunion, captured in a series of photographs, showed the emotional embrace of Adler and Ana Maria Navarrete, his biological mother, after a lifetime of searching. Adler, who was taken from his family when he was nine months old and placed with an American couple, said the meeting gave him a sense of belonging he had never felt before.

Born as Marcos Antonio Navarrete to a 19‑year‑old single mother working night shifts at a fish shop in Coronel, a coastal town 331 miles south of Santiago, his early life was marked by secrecy and loss. Navarrete, who could only afford a small room, hired a caretaker to look after the infant.

The caregiver later informed her that a local priest had arranged for the baby to be given to an American family, citing the child's need for a stable home. Navarrete, devastated, watched as her son disappeared, later learning that the placement was part of a broader illicit adoption network that operated during Chile's 17‑year military dictatorship.

Police investigators told her that judges, immigration officials, doctors and adoption agencies were complicit in a system that stole thousands of children, especially from poor and Indigenous families, to place them abroad. Adler's adoptive parents, Mike and Connie Adler, raised him with love and did not disclose the illegal origins of the adoption. After his parents' deaths in 2022, Adler turned to DNA‑testing services and the nonprofit Connecting Roots, founded by Tyler Graf, to trace his ancestry.

The genetic results matched Navarrete's family, confirming his true identity. In an interview, Adler said the discovery sparked an identity crisis but ultimately led to a profound reconnection with his heritage.

"It's been eye‑opening to see who my people are," he said. "I feel the love, I feel the compassion, the care - it's nice to have a family again. " The meeting was not only personal; it highlighted the ongoing struggle for justice and acknowledgment of the thousands of children who were taken during the Pinochet era. Organizations such as Nos Buscamos, led by Constanza Del Rio, maintain databases of missing children and advocate for legal accountability.

While the Chilean government estimates that more than 20,000 children were stolen, many families, like Navarrete's, continue to seek truth and reconciliation. Adler's story, now shared widely through international media, underscores both the trauma of forced separations and the healing power of reunification, offering a hopeful glimpse for others still searching for their roots
