Two French teenagers have confessed to strangling an 11-year-old boy to death in Rennes after accusing him of stealing fishing equipment worth about £9. The victim, Théo, was found dead on the Vilaine riverbank with a towel around his neck. The suspects, aged 15 and 16, are in custody and due in court.
Two French teenagers have admitted to the killing of an 11-year-old boy named Théo in Rennes , western France. The victim was found dead on the banks of the Vilaine River on Sunday afternoon.
A 15-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy, both in custody, are scheduled to appear before a judge. According to prosecutors, the teenagers confessed to strangling Théo in revenge because they believed he had stolen fishing gear worth approximately ten euros (£9) from them. The discovery of the body occurred after a fisherman heard a child screaming nearby and alerted emergency services.
Police arrived about ten minutes later and found the boy in a wooded area near the river, lying in bushes with a wet bath towel tied tightly around his neck. Paramedics attempted first aid, but Théo died at the scene. An autopsy confirmed death by asphyxiation. Investigators believe Théo had been fishing on the banks of the Vilaine earlier that afternoon with the two teenage suspects.
The 16-year-old boy and Théo had reportedly known each other for only one day, having met while fishing and arranged to meet again the next day. It is unclear whether Théo knew the 15-year-old girl. After the attack, the two teenagers were seen running from the scene, according to public prosecutor Frédéric Teillet. During searches of the suspects' homes, police found Théo's fishing equipment.
The pair had no prior police or judicial records and attend the same school. Prosecutor Teillet stated that the teenagers told investigators the strangulation was motivated by revenge and partly to recover the fishing gear they believed Théo had taken. Reports also indicate that Théo told his parents on Saturday that the 16-year-old had used bait to lure him. French police opened a murder investigation following the discovery of the body.
Prosecutor Teillet announced, 'As we suspect that a third party is involved in the incident, we have opened an investigation into the murder of a minor child.
' The case has been assigned to DCOS, the Department for Organized and Specialized Crime. Investigators worked through the night at the scene, with a large section of the riverbank cordoned off while forensic teams collected evidence. Divers also searched the Vilaine River for additional evidence near where the body was found. The shocking nature of the crime, involving such young suspects and a child victim over a trivial sum, has sparked intense local and national attention.
The legal process for minors in France involves specific judicial procedures, and the upcoming hearing before a judge will determine further steps, potentially including formal charges and pretrial detention. The community has been left grieving and bewildered by the violent act, highlighting concerns about youth violence and the circumstances that could lead to such a fatal escalation over a minor dispute
