After departing the hit series Yellowstone, Kevin Costner's passion project Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 failed to ignite at the box office. Now, the film is slated for a Prime Video streaming release in May 2026, offering a second chance for the actor's ambitious western epic.
The partnership between acclaimed creator Taylor Sheridan and multi-Oscar winner Kevin Costner defined the early success of the sprawling drama Yellowstone . Sheridan developed the series, with Costner starring as the formidable rancher John Dutton III.
Their collaboration propelled the show to cultural prominence until midway through its fifth season, when Costner departed due to scheduling conflicts with his own passion project, the western film saga Horizon: An American Saga. After leaving Yellowstone in June 2024, Costner focused on the first chapter of his planned four-film series, which premiered in theaters later that month.
Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1, set in 1859 and starring Costner as Hayes Ellison, aimed to chronicle the American West over a 15-year period encompassing the Civil War era. Despite its ambitious scope, the film received tepid reviews and poor box office performance, earning only $38.8 million worldwide against a $100 million production budget, before marketing costs.
Now, nearly two years after its theatrical run, the film is set for a streaming debut on Prime Video starting May 23, 2026. This release offers Horizon a chance to reach a broader audience and possibly revive Costner's vision for the saga, which remains uncertain due to the initial financial disappointment.
