A church in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, is allowing transgender women to use female toilets despite a recent Supreme Court ruling that access to private areas such as lavatories should be based on gender, which is a matter of biological fact and not choice.

A church in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, is allowing transgender women to use female toilets despite a recent Supreme Court ruling that access to private areas such as lavatories should be based on gender, which is a matter of biological fact and not choice.

The church's decision has been met with criticism from campaigners who claim it is 'brazenly encouraging people to break the law'. Staff at Sunderland Minster put a sign with the trans flag as a background outside the loos announcing that 'all women are welcome'.

However, campaigners argue that the decision amounts to a disregarding of the Supreme Court and the law. The church has offered a compromise to women who don't want to share the loos with transgender females, by providing a chaperone.

However, campaigners have questioned why the same service is not being offered to trans-identifying males who may be uncomfortable using the men's toilets. The sign at Sunderland Minster has provoked concern amongst women's rights activists, who argue that it is not in line with the Supreme Court ruling. The church's Reverend Canon Clare MacLaren has defended the sign, arguing that it does not break the law.

She has also stated that the church will seek guidance on how to proceed after the Supreme Court ruling is placed before parliament for 40 days. The church takes its safeguarding responsibilities to all vulnerable adults and children extremely seriously, and believes that transgender men and women have as much right to privacy, dignity and safety as cis-gender men and women.

However, campaigners argue that the decision is not in line with the law and is putting women's safety at risk
