TV doctor Dr. Ranj Singh shares his emotional journey of coming out as gay, the end of his seven-year marriage, and finding acceptance within his family and the LGBTQ community.

Dr. Ranj Singh , the well-known TV doctor and regular face on daytime shows like This Morning and Morning Live, has opened up about the profound personal turmoil he experienced after coming out as gay.

In a candid interview, he described how his life fractured and fell apart, a revelation that ultimately led to the end of his seven-year marriage. Singh, 46, had built what seemed like a perfect life: a successful career as an NHS clinician specializing in pediatric emergency medicine, a beautiful home, and a traditional Sikh wedding in 2005 to pharmacist Sulvinder Samra.

Yet despite ticking all the boxes he had set for himself, he felt an inexplicable emptiness that therapy eventually helped him understand. He realized he was not the person he thought he should be or was going to be, and that suppressed truth had been eating away at his happiness. Coming out to his wife in 2009 was a devastating but necessary step. Singh recalled that everything felt like it was fracturing and then falling apart.

The breakup of his marriage was followed by the difficult process of telling friends and family, which he described as dealing with everyone else. He had imagined and worked toward this perfect life only to find it wasn't his perfect life. Fortunately, his brothers offered incredible support and love, and their reactions were beyond what he had hoped for. They were surprised and had questions, but their sentiment was one of love, support, and acceptance.

It took another ten years before he had the same conversation with his parents. He braced himself for the worst, but his father said firmly, We love you, no matter what. His mother, though visibly shaken, nodded and asked why he had not told them sooner so they could have been there for him. Singh described this moment as beyond his wildest dreams and said he had never felt more love or pride for his parents.

Their unconditional acceptance was everything he had ever needed. Despite the positive outcome with his family, the aftermath of the divorce was painful for his ex-wife's family. In 2018, her father, Jemera Samra, spoke out about the ongoing hurt, saying that seeing Singh on television still brings back painful memories. The marriage and the divorce had a devastating impact on them all, and although he has accepted it, it remains difficult.

Singh and Sulvinder had met shortly after he qualified as a doctor in 2003, dated for a year, and married in a traditional Sikh ceremony followed by a Western registry and reception. They lived in a flat in East Dulwich, London, but the relationship disintegrated as Singh came to terms with his sexuality. They divorced in 2011. Today, Singh is in a relationship with actor James Colebrook, which he confirmed on Instagram in 2025.

He has found his chosen family within the LGBTQ community, describing the feeling as akin to his wings finally unfolding and taking off. He discovered and celebrated his identity, found his tribe and chosen family, and fulfilled his passions. This journey, though painful, ultimately led him to a place of authenticity and happiness
