A growing number of elderly expats are flocking to Hua Hin, Thailand, in search of love and a new life. But concerns are being raised about the chequered histories of some expats and the darker side of the expat community.
Hua Hin , a coastal city in Thailand, has become a haven for elderly expats seeking love and a new life . The city boasts one of the fastest-growing expat communities in the world, with over 1,000 Brits, mostly elderly single men, hoping to find happiness with younger women.
A survey conducted by Hua Hin Today found that 81% of expats in the city are male, with over half aged 66-75, and 96.5% said living in Hua Hin had met or surpassed their expectations. However, concerns are being raised about the chequered histories of some expats, including the recent arrest of British expat Graeme Davidson, who is accused of killing his former wife in Australia in 2020.
Davidson had become a pillar of the Hua Hin community, earning trust among locals, but his case has highlighted the darker side of the expat community. The city's 'retirement visas' make it easy for foreigners over 50 to relocate, provided they have a Thai bank account with over £18,000 or a monthly pension of £1,472. Many expats use online dating services, including ThaiFriendly, to meet younger women, and some have formed relationships with women significantly younger than themselves.
The Davidson case has forced locals to confront the reality that some expats may be escaping their pasts rather than seeking a new life. The city's demographics are changing, with a growing number of elderly expats seeking love and companionship in a foreign land. While some expats are genuinely seeking a new life, others may be using the city's relaxed laws and easy visa requirements to escape their pasts and find younger partners
