Stoke-on-Trent City Council faces backlash after painting school keep clear markings on a residential street where no school has existed for fifteen years, with residents also noting the letter 'S' was painted upside down.
A council has come under fire after painting a 'School Keep Clear' marking on a residential street where no school has existed for fifteen years.
The bright yellow road markings appeared on Greendock Street in Longton, Staffordshire, last week, baffling residents. The area previously housed Edensor Technology College, which merged with another secondary school located two and a half miles away, leading to the closure of its building in 2011. The site was later demolished and replaced with 193 homes.
Homeowners have criticized Stoke-on-Trent City Council for what they call an 'unbelievable error,' questioning who will cover the costs to correct the mistake and noting that workmen also painted the letter 'S' upside down. Residents expressed frustration that the council resurfaced a street that did not need it while pothole-ridden neighboring roads remain unrepaired.
Ali Hassan, a 72-year-old former property landlord living feet from the sign, voiced concerns that locals might now receive parking tickets for stopping outside their own houses. He questioned the council's oversight, suggesting someone in an office failed to notice the obvious absence of a school. He also highlighted the absurdity of resurfacing a road in good condition while ignoring other areas in need. The building no longer resembles a school, making the error even more inexplicable.
Benjamin Elks of the Taxpayers Alliance condemned the waste, stating that taxpayers are baffled by such bureaucratic blunders that divert resources from genuine issues like potholes. He called for immediate removal of the markings and an explanation of how the mistake was approved. Social media users joined the criticism, pointing out the upside-down 'S' and asking why no worker questioned the lack of a school.
Jane Ashworth, Labour leader at Stoke-on-Trent City Council, apologized to residents, described the work as 'a mess,' and assured that no parking tickets will be issued. The council has been contacted for further comment
