The Dragons scored two goals early, and overcame heavy pressure in the final 45 minutes while adding two more scores to take the 4-1 win over East Atlanta.
CONYERS, Ga. - Dothan United got very used to the confines of Rip Hewes Stadium over the last month, which of course always raises questions about how effective this new team will be away from home.
The Dragons rushed out to an early lead and staved off an increased pressure in the second half from East Atlanta FC while adding a couple more quality goals to come away with a 4-1 win Saturday night in Conyers, Georgia. DUSC turned up their own offensive volume early on in this one, creating plenty of opportunities in the opposing half of the field before finally they broke through just a few minutes into the game with a free kick opportunity just a few years outside the box from the left, with Tito Porter getting a bouncer past the Legends goalie to make it 1-0 good guys.
A little while later, but still within the first 20 or so minutes of game time, Oskar Kaufmann used his fancy footwork to get around not only the defender on him but also the keeper, allowing him to dribble the ball right up to the goal line and tap it in for the two-nil lead, which they would ride into the break after a suffocating defensive effort from both sides the rest of the way through the first 45.
EAFC’s break onto the score sheet came at around the 54 minute mark, when Dragons goalie Yago Darub committed a foul while attempting to prevent a goal along the left side, earning himself a yellow card and the Legends a penalty kick, which Robin Vezinhet finished into the left center netting after sending Yago diving right to make it 2-1. East Atlanta put a lot of pressure offensively on Dothan in the second half, creating a lot of opportunities, but fortunately after the penalty the Dragons relaxed, readjusted and persevered to prevent anything else from being put past them for the rest of the night.
All the while, DUSC added to their goal total, first in the 77th minute after a beautiful cross turned into an even more beautiful header from Ryan Holmes for the score, and just six minutes later Pablo Porter striked it in despite some tough defense from EAFC to make it 4-1, with the final whistle coming in not long after to make the result official. With the win, Dothan United advance to 4-0-0 on the season and 2-0-0 in USL League 2 play in the South Central Division.
East Atlanta FC suffered their first loss of the new league campaign, dropping to 0-1-2 on the year. The victory now puts Dothan at 6 points into the new season on the division table, with the Dragons sitting in the top slot thanks to their points per match still at a perfect 3-per.
EAFC’s loss will drop them on the league table despite sitting at 2 points thanks to that same points per match stat falling to 0.67 after the loss and only the two draws accounting for them on their record so far this year. DUSC will make their three-and-a-half hour drive back home and then get set for action back at The Rip on Wednesday, May 27, when they host state rivals Birmingham Legion 2.
