Sela Rodriguez will a college athlete in a few months. For now though, this T-Bird still has some unfinished business in Alaska.
ANCHORAGE , Alaska - As the midnight sun brings post season softball into view, the last few games for Sela Rodriguez have arrived in a hurry.
The Anchorage School District said goodbye to the 2025-26 school year last Thursday, and with it, have put the last remnants of high school sports into view. Rodriguez, the now senior captain at Bettye Davis East Anchorage High School, told Alaska’s News Source in April that her last season with the T-Birds has been all about enjoying the moment.
“My senior year is definitely one that I want to have more fun than anything. I don’t want to really stress a lot,” she said. Rodriguez has become a face for the sport across the Anchorage area, a mantle earned after she was named Alaska Gatorade Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons. In the action she has seen, Rodriguez has made the case she should probably earn the GPOY honor a third time.
Playing against Service on April 29, the soon-to-be St. Bonaventure Bonnie led her T-Birds to a 6-0 win behind her 14-strikeout performance. She also went a perfect 3 for 3 from the plate with 4 RBI’s and a Home Run.
“I’m really proud of my team, but I’m really proud of myself too,” she said. “I couldn’t have been this good without all the work. ” In a state where the fields she plays on are covered in snow for a good chunk of the year, Rodriguez says she’s been busy finding ways to stay game ready.
“I played for AK Crush and AK Crush has a really big facility and I just take advantage of it. If it’s open, I get to go hit, I get to go pitch,” She said.
“A lot of it is out of state ball. And playing at a higher level has definitely helped me be able to play at a higher level here as well. So I’m definitely blessed to get the opportunity. ”“Think it does make my team better because if anything they get to see at a higher level, they get to hit against me in practice and let’s just say they tee off with me all day,” she said.
“It’s pretty chill. ”Having already brought home one trophy to East Anchorage, you won’t be shocked to hear she’s hoping to do it again to close the book.
