In Perry County, Alabama, challenger Donald Bennett leads incumbent Albert Turner Jr. by a single vote after provisional ballots were counted, potentially ending Turner's 26-year tenure. Turner is considering a hand recount and has raised concerns about voter confusion and irregularities.
For the first time in 26 years, Perry County Commission District One appears poised to elect a new commissioner. After election officials counted 24 provisional ballots Tuesday, challenger Donald Bennett emerged with a razor-thin victory over longtime Commissioner Albert Turner Jr. , receiving 398 votes to Turner's 397.
The one-vote margin marks one of the closest local races in recent Perry County history and could trigger additional review of the results. Turner, who has represented District One since the late 1990s, said he was disappointed by the outcome but remains focused on ensuring every ballot is accurately counted. He expressed that his team planned to review the results and determine whether to proceed with a hand count of the ballots.
Under Alabama election procedures, races decided by extremely narrow margins can be subject to additional scrutiny. Turner stated that he believes a hand count is necessary to verify the machine tally before any final decisions are made. For more than two decades, Turner has been one of the most recognizable figures in local government, serving six consecutive terms on the commission.
During his tenure, he said the county completed numerous infrastructure and development projects, including improvements to roads, courthouse facilities, county equipment, and employee wages. He emphasized that a lot of work had been done and listed ongoing projects such as work involving the county jail, courthouse annex, county shop, and the Barnett King Center. Despite the apparent loss, Turner expressed pride in the accomplishments made during his time in office.
He noted visible results such as road improvements, water expansions, courthouse renovations, wage increases for workers, and equipment upgrades, asserting that their work was not in vain. Turner pointed to the one-vote margin as evidence of how important voter participation can be. He noted that just one additional vote would have forced a tie and two more votes would have secured another term.
Turner also raised concerns about voter turnout and what he described as confusion surrounding the election date and voting locations. He mentioned that some residents told him they believed the election had been postponed, while others said they were unable to vote in the race because they had been placed in a different district. Turner said his team intends to review those concerns as part of the post-election process.
The longtime commissioner also alleged there may have been voting irregularities involving district boundaries and said those claims would be examined before any decision is made on whether to formally contest the election. If the recount confirms Bennett's one-vote lead, Turner said he will accept the outcome and move forward. He also congratulated Bennett on the apparent victory while pledging to remain active in the community.
Turner stated that they congratulate Mr. Bennett and wish him well for the next six years, but they are not going away and will continue to be involved in the community and politics. If the results stand, Bennett will become the first new representative for Perry County Commission District One since Turner first took office 26 years ago. Turner will continue serving in the position until the newly elected commissioner takes office in November.
The election outcome highlights the importance of every vote and the potential for narrow margins to shape local governance. As the process moves forward, both supporters and opponents are closely watching to see if the recount will confirm Bennett's victory or if additional legal challenges will arise.
