Motorola's Smart Feed app temporarily redirected users to a website linked to a fashion influencer when launching Amazon, due to unintended affiliate code injection. The issue, now patched, involved devicenative.com and raised questions about data routing in pre-installed apps.
Malicious actors are prevalent online, but an unusual incident involving Motorola devices has raised eyebrows. The company's Smart Feed app, which curates content for users, was discovered to be injecting affiliate code s into the Amazon app.
When users attempted to open Amazon through Smart Feed, the app would briefly open a browser window and close it before launching the Amazon platform. According to an Android Debug Bridge (ADB) log shared on Reddit, the redirect went through a website associated with a fashion influencer, devicenative.com, an ad services provider. The issue, present in version 2.03.0070 of Smart Feed, was not reproducible when sideloading the app.
Motorola swiftly addressed the problem, calling it "unintended" and confirming that routing configurations were corrected without requiring a software update from users. The ad company, Device Native, has removed its developer documentation, and the involvement of a fashion influencer remains unexplained. Users can manually disable the Smart Feed app via Settings >Apps if desired. While resolved, the incident highlights unexpected data routing in pre-installed software
