The next OnePlus phone has just been announced, and it promises a ceramic coating that redefines durability.
OnePlus has announced more details of its next flagship smartphone, OnePlus 15. To go with last week’s announcement of the inclusion of a super-fast chip, there’s now the unveiling of a ceramic coating that promises great durability.
The company claims that the coating is much stronger than aluminum or titanium. At a time when some new phones are being criticized for being easily scratched, this new information could be crucial. On Sept. 25, OnePlus announced that the OnePlus 15 would be one of the very first devices worldwide to use Qualcomm’s newly announced Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 mobile platform, claimed to be the world’s fastest mobile system-on-a-chip. Qualcomm’s chip has enabled the OnePlus DetailMax image engine for photos that are “breathtakingly clear and truly real,” the company says. The new announcement concerns the design of the phone which is called Sand Storm. OnePlus says the design is a first for the smartphone industry, bringing aerospace-grade Micro-Arc Oxidation to the middle frame of a smartphone.A ceramic coating promises to be “3.4 times harder than aluminium mid frame and 1.3 times as tough as titanium mid frame,” the company says, while maintaining an environmentally sustainable footprint. The back of the phone is “feather-light fibre-glass,” it says. The phone itself is yet to be revealed, so it’s not yet the time to judge if the claim of being a two-generation upgrade in power, intelligence and design is justified. Similarly, the description of a “silky grip in a well-balanced hand-fit” will have to wait until the phone is properly launched. OnePlus has had a gift for surprising its audience, especially its loyal fanbase. Its mantra “Never Settle” can be a challenging one to live up to, but when phones are expected to be durable, and scratches are front-of-mind for the latest iPhones , a ceramic coating could hardly be more timely.
