A young couple who saved a baby from a burning Tesla crash four days ago spent their third date collecting breast milk donations for the now-motherless child.
Zoie Campbell, 21, and her boyfriend, Samuel Brooks, 25, gathered four coolers of donated breast milk Wednesday night from mothers across Lauderdale and Colbert counties for 7-month-old LJ, whose mother died in Sunday’s crash.
“This is our 4th and final cooler of breast milk that Lauderdale County and Colbert County moms are willing to donate,” Campbell said.on Highway 157 when 29-year-old Kayleigh Page’s Tesla ran off the road, hit a tree, and caught fire with Page and her baby trapped inside. “I don’t even know how to explain it. It was almost like the moment she left that right lane. It was instantaneous. She just got faster and faster and faster,” Brooks said.“Trying to get anybody’s attention. Nobody was answering,” Brooks said. “And then I saw the baby on board sign. Started hitting that window. I was punching it, throwing rocks, I grabbed a jackstand out of the bed of my truck, trying to break it,” Brooks said. The couple managed to rescue LJ from the burning vehicle, but Page’s window wouldn’t break, and the fire became too intense. She died inside. The night of the crash happened to be Campbell and Brooks’ second date. Wednesday’s breast milk collection drive was their third. “I’d rather do this, though, I’d rather help a little baby than go out and have fun by myself,” Campbell said. While Brooks and Campbell may be heroes, they both said they only did what they hoped others would do for them. “I didn’t do it for recognition, I did it to help somebody. I don’t care what people think of me. I just want to help people,” Brooks said.to help take care of 7-month-old LJ. The Funeral is on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Morrison Funeral Home in Florence.
