Annie Wonderlich, a 43-year-old content creator from Los Angeles, has purchased a 1980s converted RV for $54,000 and is transforming it into a dreamy forest cottage inspired by her travels to the Cotswolds in England.
The quirky home, located in Washington State, cost her $54,000, and she made a $15,000 down payment from her savings. She now pays $754.14 per month on a five-year mortgage plan, aiming to be mortgage-free by 2031. Annie deliberately chose this unconventional lifestyle to avoid the burden of a 30-year mortgage, which she describes as a trap that keeps people working for years.
Instead, she is designing a life that prioritizes peace, solitude, and slow mornings, rejecting the American dream of ever-expanding material wealth. Annie's journey to this point has been marked by hardship. After the pandemic and LA's shutdown forced her out of a planned apartment move, she lived in a van with her two dogs, Charlie and Emilie, for four years.
Then, during a Christmas trip to the Cotswolds in 2023, she fell down a flight of stairs, breaking her back and wrist. She spent two weeks in a UK hospital and had to pay $1,500 for a return flight because she couldn't sit up. The accident left her in major debt and unable to work.
She spent two years living in her mother's attic, recovering and paying off debts before her sister found the RV through word of mouth in August 2025. The RV already had a sundeck and sunroom attached, which sealed the deal. Since moving in in February 2026, Annie has cleaned out old carpets and mouse droppings, installed wooden flooring, and painted the interior. Her sunroom and living room are complete, and she is now renovating the kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom.
She has spent $1,800 so far but has no set budget, preferring to make changes over time to create a special place. She also plans to build a 200-square-foot shed to use as her dream wardrobe and vanity, and she intends to add a façade to the outside of the RV to make it resemble an English cottage. Her monthly expenses include $754.14 for the mortgage, $250 for utilities, $50 for Wi-Fi and other bills, plus remaining medical debt payments.
