A writer shares their experience as an election worker and the annual struggle with receiving tax documents from the DC Board of Elections. They highlight the delay in receiving their 1099 and the frustration caused by the discrepancy with the standard January 31st postmark deadline.
I was an election worker in 2024 during the primary and general elections, and I have worked every election since the pandemic to ensure that older workers who needed to stay home were replaced. It was overall a great experience over the years, but now it is tax season.
Each year there has been a hiccup. One year they sent my 1099 to my ex’s place despite me updating my address during the in-processing, but he was kind enough to forward it to me. Another year, I guess something changed and they sent a 1099 only to replace it with a W-2C. I guess they felt we were classified incorrectly, so I had to refile my taxes. I work in HR, so I know that personnel tax documents need to be postmarked by January 31st. It is well after that date, and mine hasn’t arrived. I called the DC Board of Elections and they referred me to the Office of Pay and Retirement Services who produces the tax documents. They said they will go out on February 14th. I am not sure if government offices have a different due date for their tax documents, but I did find it strange that they don’t have the same January 31st date as everyone else.or call them at 202-741-8622.
