The team was trapped inside their own ship, the Spirit of St. Augustine, which was infected by a virus that transformed it into a nightmarish biomechanical monster. The virus also spread inside, infecting the heroes and transforming Cyclops into a terrifying one-eyed creature.
Beast convinces the ship to develop its own identity and set the X-Men free. The ship, now named Leviathan, is a giant mechanical shark with sharp fangs and spikes all over its back. It retains all of the original ship's weapons and tools, including state-of-the-art radars and sensors, as well as top-tier propellers and record-breaking depth capabilities. Inside, Leviathan may retain the ability to immerse its targets into nightmare scenarios and transform them into monstrous versions of themselves.
This is not the first living headquarters in Marvel Lore. The sentient island of Krakoa served as the living sovereign nation-state for all mutantkind, and it provided its own biological flora to grow specialized teleportation gates and organic living quarters. The X-Men's high-tech Danger Room also broke its digital programming and revealed that it had developed a highly complex, self-aware artificial intelligence that later manifested a physical, robotic form known simply as Danger.
Two Celestials became headquarters following their death: Knowhere is the severed head of a long-dead Celestial, and Avengers Mountain is the hollowed-out skeletal remains of the Progenitor. The concept of a living cooperative sanctuary finds a modern counterpart in The Impossible City, a hyper-advanced sentient fortress that originally served the Ashen Combine. Like Leviathan, the Impossible City was originally called Camelot before it developed its own sympathetic personality and pledged loyalty to the Avengers.
