Indeed, it might be impossible to find a parent who has not sought favours for a child when they were 'between jobs' or even looking for a Saturday job. Yet the queen was no ordinary parent, and higher standards are expected from a constitutional monarch revered for putting duty ahead of family over her long reign.
In some respects, her dedication to duty was a double-edged sword in that it saw her admired as a dedicated head of state but also condemned over her family, whose personal problems stemmed from childhood emotional deprivation. Or - like some institutional leaders including our Catholic hierarchy who turned a blind eye to the rotten apples in their midst - she may have believed that by royal as by ecclesiastical prerogative, Andrew was entitled to the run of the country. If that's the case, then the royal family's greatest asset and its black sheep will be permanently entwined
