Luke Bryan's new song 'Fish Hunt Golf Drink' faces backlash as fans claim it sounds AI-generated, but co-writers insist the track is authentically human and defend the creative process behind it.
Country music has always thrived on authenticity, but when Luke Bryan released his latest single, Fish Hunt Golf Drink , some fans were convinced the song was written by artificial intelligence rather than human songwriters.
The track, a lighthearted anthem about stereotypical country activities, sparked online ridicule and accusations of being AI-generated slop. However, the song's co-writers, HARDY and Zachary (alternatively: Rocky) McGill along with producer Joey Moi (alternatively: Dragstrem), are pushing back against the notion that their craft can be replicated by a machine. In an interview, McGill defended the song's playful nature and emphasized that human experience is irreplaceable in songwriting.
Ive skinned a deer on a Chevy C-10 tailgate with my uncle, he said, referencing his work on Morgan Wallens Skoal, Chevy and Browning. AI has never done that. The controversy comes at a time when accusations of using AI are increasingly leveled at artists and writers whose work appears formulaic. Country music, with its reliance on familiar tropes like trucks, whiskey, and heartbreak, is particularly vulnerable.
But the songwriters remain unbothered. When the hate is strong, so is the BMI payment, McGill quipped, referring to royalties. The song originated from a text exchange between Bryan and a friend, where emojis of a fish, deer, golf club, and beer inspired the concept. McGill and Dragstrem quickly wrote the chorus, and Bryan penned most of the verses himself.
Both writers insist they have never used AI in their professional work and view it as a limited tool at best. Theres no fulfillment in asking AI to write a song, McGill said. Thats not what I signed up for. As the debate over AI in music continues, Bryan and his team stand by the song as a reflection of his genuine interests: fishing, hunting, golfing, and having a good time.
The backlash has done little to dampen their spirits, with Bryan himself responding to critics online: I choose to have a damn blast. Either come along or go be blah
