A domestic abuse victim identified as Marie was left stunned when her partner, Spencer Dean, received a community order instead of a jail sentence despite CCTV capturing months of violent assaults, including punching, kicking, and spitting. Dean admitted multiple offences after police discovered cannabis plants at their Kent home and reviewed the footage. The victim described the controlling behaviour and its impact on her and her children, raising questions about sentencing in abuse cases.
A woman identified as Marie to protect her identity endured months of violent abuse at the hands of her partner, Spencer Dean, captured on CCTV installed inside their home in Ashford, Kent .
The footage showed Dean repeatedly punching, kicking, spitting at, and throwing objects at Marie, as well as dragging her by the hair and forcing her onto a bed while shouting that he hoped she would die. The abuse occurred over an extended period, sometimes while Marie's children were present, though Marie did not report it to police at the time due to fear and Dean's threats that she would lose custody of her children if his cannabis cultivation in the loft was discovered.
Marie secretly contacted a neighbour on March 29, asking them to call police because she had reached the end of her tolerance. When officers arrived at the property that day, they found Marie with a cut and bruising beneath her eye, and discovered cannabis plants Dean was growing in the loft. Reviewing the CCTV footage revealed months of assaults and criminal damage.
Dean, a 34-year-old roofer of no fixed address, admitted three counts of assault by beating, two counts of criminal damage, and one count of cultivating cannabis. Despite the graphic evidence and his admissions, magistrates at Margate Magistrates' Court sentenced Dean to a community order rather than imprisonment on May 12, accepting probation recommendations.
Marie expressed shock and devastation at the decision, stating she was left stunned that he avoided jail given the repeated attacks and their profound impact on her and her children. She described the relationship as starting well before Dean's jealousy escalated into controlling behavior, isolating her from social media, family, and friends.
Marie said she became too frightened to ask him to leave when her children were home because violence would follow, learning to endure abuse silently to shield them from witnessing it. The emotional toll left her feeling broken, confused, and self-hating, while worrying about her children's wellbeing. The CCTV, originally installed for child safeguarding reasons, ultimately provided crucial evidence that exposed the abuse.
Prosecutor Dylan Bradshaw noted the case was unusual because the abuse was uncovered through internal cameras rather than a police report. Marie emphasized that Dean used the cannabis operation to intimidate her into silence, threatening that involving police would lead to her losing her children. When officers found the plants, she realized she had to act, showing them the footage despite not wanting to get Dean in trouble, driven by fear of future violence.
The sentencing outcome has sparked concerns about the justice system's handling of domestic abuse cases, especially where victims face barriers to reporting and where substantial evidence exists but custodial sentences are deemed unnecessary by magistrates
