The proposed plan is a comprehensive response, heavily centered around community engagement.

) - A master plan that outlines a transformative vision for the corridor encompassing Norman Bridge Road and Augusta Avenue has now unanimously passed the Montgomery City Council Planning Commission and is headed to the full City Council in Mid-June.

The proposed plan is a comprehensive response, heavily centered around community engagement. It focuses on three core pillars: strategic land reclamation, safety and connectivity, and integrated growth.

“We’re calling it the Greater Floyd Campus,” said Lois Cornell, senior development manager of the Department of Economics and Development. “It’s A long-range plan, and the city’s comprehensive plan had recommended this area for open space and recreation. So we built on that recommendation and tried to put it into a specific phased plan that we could then put into action with community buy-in.

” The project is truly community-centered, with community input not only a step during planning, but interwoven throughout the whole planning and design process.

“Throughout the process, we heard concerns about blighted buildings, street racing, litter vandalism, trespassing,” Cornell said. “But we also heard, and what I want to emphasize from the Normandale area, is their pride in their neighborhood and their history and their commitment to come together and improve it. ” “It was not a consultant-driven project,” District Seven Councilman Andrew Szymanski said.

“This is a community-driven project that’s going to transform the neighborhood. ”“This piece of property sits in the middle of a really important neighborhood with lots of residents, single-family homeowners,” Szymanski said.

“And so public safety and mitigating crime was a huge component of this project, which is why they had all the CPTED kind of input that was in there, lighting, different ways to handle some of the traffic and cut through, and speeding, just things that made it more inviting and really hopefully a crown jewel for the middle of the city of Montgomery. ” The plan involves removing blighted and abandoned properties from the campus, constructing state-of-the-art turf baseball and soccer fields, renovating the existing Floyd community center and repurposing adjacent structures, building a community garden, building a scenic walking path, as well as several other upgrades.

“The purpose of this master plan was to create a long-term vision for revitalization that addresses blight, recreation, connectivity, safety, and future redevelopment opportunities within the neighborhood,” Glazer Robinson, project manager, said.. The plan now awaits approval from the Montgomery City Council.
