Celebrity stylist Lisa Talbot reveals the key habits women over 50 should adopt and avoid, from embracing relaxed tailoring to choosing softer colours and editing wardrobes for confidence and modernity.
As women move beyond their fifth decade, the challenge of finding clothing that flatters a changing body while remaining sophisticated often looms large. Celebrity stylist Lisa Talbot recently outlined seven key fashion habits that women over fifty should adopt, and equally important, seven approaches they should avoid.
Her advice, given to the Daily Mail, emphasizes that style is not about disappearing into safety, but about embracing modern, flattering pieces that reflect personal confidence. She stresses that the most powerful accessory at any age is confidence, and that mature shoppers should focus on proportion, quality, colour and the emotional impact of each garment rather than adhering to outdated age rules.
According to Talbot, women in mid‑life possess a deeper self‑awareness than they did in their thirties, and this insight should guide their wardrobe choices, steering them away from attempts to look younger and toward dressing with intention and poise. The first rule Talbot warns against is the tendency to wear head‑to‑toe oversized clothing, which can overwhelm a figure and obscure natural shape. Instead, she recommends relaxed tailoring that offers structure while honoring the body's lines.
Think of a well‑cut blazer paired with straight‑leg jeans, fluid trousers combined with a fitted knit, or wide‑leg tailored pants and soft blazers drawn from high‑street brands. The second habit to discard is the reliance on restrictive clothing that pulls or pinches. Talbot advises prioritising elevated comfort through premium stretch denim, softer fabrics and fluid dresses, highlighting current trends such as barrel‑leg jeans, soft denim, jersey midi dresses and linen blends.
By choosing pieces that feel easy to wear, mid‑life women can project sophistication without compromising comfort. The third and fourth guidelines focus on trend management. Talbot suggests that women over fifty should not chase every fleeting fashion moment; rather, they should incorporate one or two contemporary pieces each season, like a suede jacket, a butter‑yellow knit or a chocolate‑brown accessory, to modernise their look without feeling overwhelmed.
At the same time, she cautions against dressing 'too young' by copying the wardrobe of a twenty‑year‑old. Instead, she recommends adapting trends to suit a mature lifestyle - for example, swapping a micro‑mini for a midi skirt or a tailored short with a crisp shirt. The fifth rule addresses colour choices.
Rather than defaulting to black for safety, Talbot encourages exploring softer neutrals such as cream, camel, olive, navy, chocolate brown and pastel tones, which can brighten the complexion and energise the overall appearance. Finally, she urges women to declutter wardrobes that contain relics from previous phases of life.
By editing out pieces that no longer align with current body shape, lifestyle or confidence level, and keeping only items that genuinely reflect who they are now, women can build a functional, inspiring collection that supports their evolving style journey
