A criminal defense attorney said a former Utah judge accused of child sex crimes "snitched on himself" when it's alleged he spoke to investigators after his arrest, and after he had been read Miranda rights.
Clayton Simms has defended clients in cases similar to those of ex-judge Kevin Christensen and ex-fire chief Ned Brady Hansen, who investigators said are linked in the alleged crimes. "The judge tattle-talked on himself," said Simms. "It's very odd. When he was presented with questioning, he answered the questions."Box Elder County judge accused of multiple child sex crimes "My guess is that's what's delaying the federal indictment," Simms said. "They're fully investigating it."Simms and Cleveland are not connected to the cases of Christensen - the veteran judge who resigned in the face of charges, including two counts of enticing a minor on the internet - and Ned Brady Hansen, the former fire chief who was fired by Tremonton City leaders after allegations surfaced he sexually exploited minors. Simms noted it's still a "mystery" over how Hansen and Christensen arrived at a "shared interest" in the alleged crimes, though at least one investigator said there's information the two men had sexual encounters together. On a U.S. Department of Justice website, the DOJ said "federal jurisdiction almost always applies when the internet is used to commit a child pornography violation," even if the image "did not travel across state or international borders." Christensen is accused of having sex chats with someone who "stated she was a 13-year-old female child," and with "another person who identified herself as a 16-year-old female." In the chats, it's alleged nude images were shared. Hansen, according to an investigator, had multiple chats in which he discussed the sexual abuse of children. Post Miranda, investigators said both defendants spoke to them, Hansen allegedly saying he had "a pornography addiction," and Christensen allegedly admitting he was the person who engaged in the online exchanges but termed them "fantasy chats." An investigator also reported Christensen said he deleted "all evidence of these chats" after a "co-conspirator" was arrested.
