Mexico's Attorney General's Office is investigating Chihuahua's Governor, Maria Eugenia 'Maru' Campos, for allegedly collaborating with U.S. agencies to combat drug cartels, a move that has sparked a political firestorm. The probe comes amidst escalating tensions between the U.S. and Mexican governments over drug-related issues and the prosecution of politicians linked to cartels.
Mexico 's Attorney General's Office has sparked a political storm by questioning Chihuahua's Governor, Maria Eugenia 'Maru' Campos, in connection with two separate investigations. The first hearing, initially meant to summon Campos as a witness, has now evolved into a potential criminal prosecution, with the government accusing her of working with U.S. agencies to fight drug cartels , an act they deem as a violation of national sovereignty.
The controversy began in April when two U.S. agents died in a highway crash following a raid by state police forces on a major drug lab linked to the Sinaloa Cartel. Instead of lauding the operation, the federal government cried foul, alleging the presence of CIA agents in Mexico. This incident coincided with the U.S. government's indictment of top officials from Mexico's ruling MORENA party, including Sinaloa's Governor Ruben Rocha Moya, on charges of working for the Sinaloa Cartel.
President Claudia Sheinbaum has since defended Rocha Moya, claiming lack of evidence against him. The tension between the U.S. and Mexican governments has escalated, with the U.S. pushing for action against both cartels and politicians aiding them. In Campos' case, President Sheinbaum herself called for an investigation, labeling Campos' actions as treasonous.
Days later, Campos received a second summons, this time for allegedly conspiring to kidnap her predecessor, Javier Corral, who is linked to drug cartels and has since aligned with MORENA, protecting himself from political rivals
