Actor Neal McDonough reveals how Luke Perry provided a home for his family after he lost everything due to being fired for refusing to kiss a female co-star on religious grounds, leading to addiction and redemption.
Neal McDonough, known for his roles in Yellowstone , Justified, Arrow, and other productions, has shared a personal story about a difficult period in his career and the unexpected kindness he received from the late Luke Perry .
According to McDonough, he was fired from a television series-which he did not name-because he refused to perform a kissing scene with a female co-star. His decision stemmed from a deep commitment to his wife, Ruve, whom he married in 2003. This stance, he said, led to him being labeled an un-hirable religious fanatic in the industry, causing a spiral in both his career and personal life.
The actor described a descent into alcohol abuse, saying he lost his house, cars, and everything else. In his lowest moment, Luke Perry, a friend from earlier in his career, opened his home to McDonough and his family, allowing them to live there until they could recover. Perry, famed for his role on Beverly Hills, 90210, died in 2019 at age 52.
McDonough recounted that at the time, he was beginning work on the series Justified but still felt worthless because he had failed his family. The experience was a crucible that made him confront his self-destructive path. His wife eventually gave him an ultimatum: the bottle or their family. He chose to quit drinking entirely and rededicated his life to spiritual service rather than self-service.
That turnaround eventually led to a resurgence in his career, with roles in Yellowstone, Tulsa King, and many other shows. He and his wife now collaborate on producing films. He calls Ruve his good luck charm and credits her with helping him through the darkest chapter. The story highlights themes of professional integrity, friendship, addiction, redemption, and the power of a supportive partnership
