Two separate ski lift malfunctions in New Hampshire have led to the evacuation of dozens of passengers. A faulty bolt caused a mechanical failure on the Peabody Express Quad at Cannon Mountain, while another incident at Attitash Mountain Resort resulted in a lift chair falling 20 feet, injuring a passenger. Both lifts are currently closed pending further investigation.
More than 60 passengers were successfully evacuated from a ski lift in New Hampshire after a mechanical failure. The incident occurred on Wednesday at the Peabody Express Quad at Cannon Mountain, where 64 passengers were lowered by rope over approximately two hours. No injuries were reported. Officials from the state, which owns the ski area in Franconia Notch State Park, stated that a faulty bolt was responsible for the malfunction.
The lift has been closed pending inspection and remained out of service on Thursday due to gusty winds hindering access to the summit and limiting other lift operations. This incident follows a similar event on Sunday at Attitash Mountain Resort in Bartlett, New Hampshire, where a man sustained non-life-threatening injuries after the lift chair he was riding fell approximately 20 feet (6 meters) to the ground. Investigators believe a mechanical failure caused the chair to dislodge, and that lift also remains closed. The state fire marshal's office noted that both lifts had undergone state inspections within the past year, as mandated by the New Hampshire Code of Administrative Rules. Last December, a crack in a ski lift at Winter Park Resort in Colorado stranded over 170 skiers and snowboarders. Passengers in the gondolas were safely lowered to the ground in an operation that lasted about five hours.
