“We’re going to revitalize this neighborhood,” Hicks explained. “We’re going to put new homes where there are vacant lots.” A former Cleveland Heights councilman from 1998 to 2006, Rev. Hicks, has a plan: one-story, 1500-square foot houses, one design singles with three bedrooms and two baths and a 15-year tax abatement.
Funding will come from Cornerstone Fund.Start Right has already built one home on Nela View Road with another set to start construction on another vacant lot on the street, all to help tackle a problem. “The Cardonia neighborhood of Cleveland Heights off of Noble Road, where these orange dots are vacant lots,” Hicks said, point to 40 markers. ‘Our goal is to build on each of these lots.” Part of Start Right’s visions for this neighborhood includes Nobility Courts, 52 units on the site of a former McDonald’s, vacant for more than thirty years.” “We’re twenty-five percent partners in Nobility Court and we’re responsible for putting in the coffee shop and making sure it is running,” said Hicks about one of the requests from neighbors. “ making sure the residents receive one of the things they asked for.” Nobility Courts will open this fall and Start Right has also rehabbed another twenty homes in the neighborhood as well as helping put in a hunger center.The group will build more houses as soon as the newly built homes sell.
