WTVY honored for documentary profiling high school athlete’s sudden death

The Semaj Wilkins story allowed those closest to Wilkins to tell in their own words how his death impacted them, gave his mother a platform to honor her son, and investigated the issue of sudden cardiac death among athletes.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - WTVY News4 received a prestigious ABBY award from the Alabama Broadcasters Association for the station’s documentary profiling the death of a 14-year-old New Brockton football player.

The Semaj Wilkins story allowed those closest to Wilkins to tell in their own words how his death impacted them, gave his mother a platform to honor her son, and investigated the issue of sudden cardiac death among athletes. WTVY anchor Beyla Walker displayed the ABBY award for Best Documentary on April 11, 2026.
