Alec Penstone, a WWII veteran who survived D-Day and the Arctic Convoys, died at 101 after a life of service. He sparked controversy by saying the war's sacrifice was wasted due to Britain's decline.

Alec Penstone , a World War Two veteran who survived the D-Day landings but later expressed regret over the sacrifice of his generation due to the state of modern Britain, has died at the age of 101.

He passed away at Mountbatten Hospice in Newport on the Isle of Wight on Thursday, surrounded by family. Penstone, from Shanklin, dedicated his life to military service and patriotism, but in his final years he became known for a startling admission on national television that the war 'wasn't worth it' because of what he saw as the nation's decline. Born in the East End of London in 1925, Penstone was just 15 when World War Two began.

He volunteered as a part-time air raid messenger during the Blitz, helping pull victims from bombed buildings. He joined the Navy in 1943, fulfilling a promise to his father not to serve in the trenches after his father was severely wounded by friendly fire in the Battle of the Somme. Penstone trained in submarine detection and served with distinction in the Arctic Convoys to Russia aboard HMS Campania.

In June 1944, he played a vital role in D-Day, constantly on watch for torpedoes, mines, and U-boats. After the war, Penstone continued to serve his country, becoming the oldest poppy seller in the UK at age 100. But in 2024, he appeared on Good Morning Britain and told presenters Kate Garraway and Adil Ray that the sacrifice of his fallen comrades was not worth the state of the country today.

He said, 'What we fought for was our freedom, but now it's a darn sight worse than when I fought for it. The country has gone to rack and ruin.

' He added, 'I don't know what the hell we fought for and lost so many wonderful men. ' Despite his anger, he clarified he had no hostility toward foreigners, only a belief that people should behave themselves. His comments left the hosts mortified. Penstone insisted he was not a hero, saying, 'The heroes are all the dead ones. ' He is survived by his family, including two grandchildren
