Cynthia Erivo discusses her quick thinking during a fan incident with Ariana Grande, the online reaction to the event, and her feelings about the upcoming Wicked movie.

Cynthia Erivo has opened up about an incident during the Wicked press tour where she had to physically remove a fan from Ariana Grande . In an interview with The Stylist, Erivo recalled her immediate reaction to the situation, 'Nobody moved.

Nobody moved. So I moved because my brain went, 'Get him away! Get him out of here!

' I just kept pushing at him to get him off. ' She emphasized the importance of personal space, stating, 'A stranger is a stranger. Personal space is still personal space. It doesn't belong to anyone, even if you feel you know the person.

In that moment, we were all terrified.

' Erivo also discussed the online reaction to the incident, expressing her frustration at the jokes and memes that portrayed her as Grande's 'bodyguard'. She believes these reactions stem from society's insidious views on Black women, saying, 'I think that we haven't really come to terms with the insidious nature of how we view Black women... It was my physique; it was my shape; it was the fact that I was bald; it was about what I looked like.

And because of that, there was this assumption that I was bigger than my costar and so I had to be controlling or protecting, and that was my role.

' In her new book, Simply More, Erivo reflects on her long history with the musical Wicked and her role as Elphaba. She reveals that she saw the musical on stage for the first time on her 16th birthday and felt an instant connection.

However, she also discusses her hesitance to return for the Wicked movie, stating, 'It's too soon to even begin to have the conversation about it. It would take a lot to get me back to do it. It has to make sense.
