) - With temperatures hitting dangerous levels this week, those who have to work outdoors are taking extra steps to prevent a heat-related illness. John Bell and his crew with Black Jack Horticulture are no strangers to adapting to work in the heat from what they wear to the work they do.

“Normally, we’d cut, but with it being so hot, you can see the grass is brown. So, we’re not cutting the grass. Even though the irrigation has been running for five days without any rain, there’s no need to cut the grass,” said Bell.Bell said they also incorporate electrolytes, and they pay close attention to what they’re eating during their breaks. “Try not to eat a lot of stuff that’s not good and heavy,” said Bell. “We normally try to get a lot of fruit and stuff like that.”Experts recommend lightweight clothing, wearing sunscreen and taking regular breaks as needed. “When it gets really hot, we tend to stay away from the sun and try and find spots in the shade to work in where it ain’t too hot,” said Bell. Symptoms of a heat-related illness include dizziness, nausea and sweating. If you believe you are experiencing any of this while working outside, be sure to go to a cool place.Gunman kills 4, including police officer, in shooting at New York City office towerMan wanted in Montgomery business robberyPreventing heat related illness during summer temps
