A superb first-half scoring display set the Dragons up perfectly en route to a 4-0 division win over Birmingham Legion 2 on Wednesday night.
DOTHAN , Ala. - Dothan United put on yet another dominant display in midweek action on Wednesday night under the lights at Rip Hewes Stadium, as the Dragons bested their in-state and division rivals Birmingham Legion 2 with a 4-0 shutout.
DUSC’s offensive firestorm came primarily in the first half, and it started with a bang just 21 minutes into the game when a long pass from midfield to the front left edge of the box got headed high, and coming down with it on a clean touch was Josh Salas, who sent a heater off his right foot that rocketed 20-plus yards and easily past the Legion keeper for an incredible goal.
About 6 minutes of game time later, a well-time and executed steal from Tiago Campos got the ball back into scoring position, where the midfielder with place in an easy touch pass to the inside-right of the box for Oskar Kaufmann, who would steady himself for a strike that would fly into the net just over the goalie’s hands for another Dragons goal.
The final goal of the first 45 minutes came just about a minute into added time in the first half, with Campos taking the ball all the way to the back left of the box and sending a clean chip shot soaring up and into the right netting for yet another fantastic goal and a 3-0 DUSC lead going into the locker rooms.
The second half would prove a bit more difficult for scoring on both ends, but the home side would grab one more goal on the night at the 54-minute mark on a great team run up the field highlighted by Alec Palanjian dribbling in a cross right in front of the goal, finding the waiting foot of Rodrigo Lopes for a tap past the keeper for the fourth and final score of the night for Dothan. The first shutout of the league season for DUSC brought their record to 5-0-0 overall on the year and 3-0-0 in South Central Division play, while Birmingham’s first loss of the early campaign dropping them to 0-1-1.
Another three points for the Dragons puts them at 9 now in the division standings and in an even better spot atop the table, with Legion 2 sitting in last place on just 1 point gained so far this year and with the tiebreaker at the bottom favoring Montgomery with the slightly better goal difference. Dothan United’s next clash of the year will come under the national spotlight, as the Dragons will be featured in the USL League 2 Game of the Week on Saturday, May 30, when they host Columbus United in an early season top of the division battle.
