After 5 years of silence, Square Enix has finally revealed the trailer for Dragon Quest 12: Beyond Dreams. The game is said to shape the next 10-20 years of the series and has high expectations following the success of Dragon Quest 11.
It's been 5 years since Dragon Quest 12 : The Flames Of Fate was announced during the series' 35th anniversary livestream in 2021. Since then, Square Enix has been extremely quiet on the long-awaited RPG.
Despite a logo update and some news the game had hit a hitch or two, Dragon Quest fans have gotten nothing. No hero design. No gameplay footage. Not even a cinematic trailer.
Just the logo and a title. Now, here we are, it's 2026 and Dragon Quest is celebrating its 40th anniversary. This year's livestream on YouTube was admittedly shorter than expected, but it's not a short stream that everyone will remember. Because, at long last, fans have finally been given the glimpse of Dragon Quest 12 they've been waiting for.
The trailer reveals a number of characters, including the hero. We also see a robot and a reptilian creature, giving serious Chrono Trigger vibes. We also get a new subtitle: Dragon Quest 12: Beyond Dreams. Dragon Quest 12 is said to shape the next 10-20 years of the series, and after the immense success of Dragon Quest 11, which brought the long-running series some much larger (and much deserved) global recognition, expectations are understandably high.
It may be a bit too early to know for sure how DQ12 will rank among all the other entries, but a darker story is certainly interesting. It's been a weird road for Dragon Quest 12, so it's great that we finally have something more concrete to hold onto. Honestly, the game was probably just announced a bit too early in 2021 since it was the 35th anniversary.
In the time since, the series' character and monster designer Akira Toriyama (of Dragon Ball fame) and the franchise's longtime composer Koichi Sugiyama have both passed away. Of those original three, only creator Yuji Horii is left. The global pandemic that we were in the middle of when the game was first announced also likely contributed to development of Dragon Quest 12 taking longer than expected, and from starting over from scratch.
Thankfully, it looks like Dragon Quest 12 is now well on its way to releasing
